Biography:
Born in June 1800, she was the daughter of Josefa Baraya and Pantaleón Sanz de Santamaría of Bogotá. In August 1816 she, her brother, sister and mother were sent into exile by Morillo to the town of Manta (Ecuador?). They were probably held in the Cárcel Chiquita beforehand. They had to walk there, conducted by a guard of rude, uncouth soldiers. A member of the Ricaurte family on her mother's side. Niece of General Antonio Baraya. She married Juan Bernardo Elbers, a great friend of Bolívar, in 1822. (Monsalve, 156, 159, 221)

Her father and uncle were both executed by the royalists. (Monsalve, 218)

She was the sister of María Josefa Sanz de Santamaría Baraya de Montoya.
