From Colombia, she married General Pedro Fortoul. In 1816 Fortoul sent her and their three young girls to Apure, and when the situation worsened to Nutrias. This was in turn attacked and occupied by the royalists, leaving the family without protection. The eldest daughter died of hunger and Ramírez witnessed the shooting of her relative Dr Piedri. Fortoul managed to reach them and they fled into the desert where they survived by eating horse meat, and roots. (Monsalve, 243)
