Biography:
A slave from Banda Oriental who fled Montevideo to join the Buenos Aires army during the siege of 1814. She claimed she was married to a black soldier in the 6th regiment and hence demanded her freedom. Her owner objected, and the authorities decided that she should have her freedom on the basis that the property of the enemy could be taken in war. (Blanchard, 6-7)
