A slave woman from Lima who in 1823 who tried to use the new independent legal system to gain her freedom. She drew on "the superior decrees issued in favour of freedom promulgated by edict in this capital", criticising "those laws contrary to freedom and independence" in Lima. Her owner claimed that slaves did not understand the law. (Blanchard, 11)
