Biography:
She was born around 1801, near to Concepción, Chile, the daughter of Mauricio Soto and Manuela Guzmán.

The Spanish governor of Concepción fell in love with her as she was so beautiful, graceful and discrete. He ordered her father to Concepción. He was blind and ill, and too weak to go and sent his wife and daughter in his place. In a plan to seduce Soto, the governor then accused Guzmán of holding patriotic tertulias at her hacienda and accused her and Soto of being patriots. They denied the charge and were imprisoned for 17 days until their captors felt compassion for them and allowed them to escape. (Grez, 97-100)
