Born in 1759 in Mendoza into an influential Creole family. He went to Chile and joined the independence cause in 1810. He was a member of the governing junta from 1810-11, the 1811 Congress, and of the Concepción provisional junta 1811-12. He was exiled to Mendoza in 1812 and died there the following year. He influenced his niece, Manuela Rozas. (Grez, 89)
He was allied to the Larraín family and clan the "Eight Hundred" and this put him against the Carreras and with Bernardo O'Higgins and Juan Mackenna.
