Staff Achievements

At the School of Health Sciences we believe that the quality of our teaching and dedication of our members of staff is second to none, so we're extremely proud that we regularly receive recognition for the excellent work that our staff members do.  

As we strive for increasing excellence in our teaching and learning we hope that we can build upon these great achievements and continue to ensure that our students have a positive and encouraging learning experience while with us.


Other awards

Lord Dearing Awards

Our school has consistently received more Lord Dearing Awards than any other school year on year since 1999. This is a huge achievement and is highly valued by the school as the Awards recognise the outstanding staff achievements in enhancing the student learning experience.

Staff Oscars

Our students have also shown their appreciation of the high standard of teaching and support they receive from the school's staff by nominating them for Students' Union Staff Oscars.


This is another set of annual accolades which our staff are consistently put forward for. The Staff Oscars are highly competitive, with up to 500 nominations every year. 

In 2017 three staff gained runner-up awards:

  • Teaching: Most Inspiring = Suzanne Britt (runner up)
  • Supervisors: Best Dissertation Supervisor = Holly Blake (runner up)
  • Supervisors: Best Research Supervisor = Holly Blake (runner up)
  • Personal Tutor: Difficult Issue = Becky Whittaker (runner up) 
Past winners

For 2015/16 the school's winners were:

  • Lucie Whitfield - Won 'Best Member of Support Staff'
  • Chris Middleton - Won 'Best All Round Personal Tutor'

2013/14 winners and runners upe:

  • Stacy Johnson - Won 'Best in Preparing Students for the Future'
  • Louise Clark - Runner-up in 'Best Personal Tutor in Dealing with a Difficult Issue'
  • Linda East - Runner-up in 'Best All Round Personal Tutor'

For 2012/13 15 members of staff received a total of 31 nominations over 10 different categories. The school's winners were:

  • Philip Clissett – Best Dissertation Supervisor Oscar
  • Joanne Lymn – Prepare for the Future Oscar

National Teaching Fellowships

We have three recipients of the highly prestigious National Teaching Fellowship working within the school:

  • Joanne Lymn (2013)
  • Kim Russell (2012)
  • Aru Narayanasamy (2008)

National Teaching Fellowships are awarded by the Higher Education Academy to recognise and reward excellence in teaching and the facilitation of learning at a national (and international) level.
