Overview
This course considers:
- Comparing and contrasting healthcare systems and practices in an international context
- Identifying the difference between global humanitarian responses, development initiatives and their impact on maternity outcomes
- Exploring and developing the epidemiological, educational, clinical and leadership dimensions of advanced practice in midwifery/nursing
- Understanding the current debates in global health development and how they apply to the delivery of maternity care
- Identifying alternative clinical management of maternity adverse events and emergencies in a low resource setting
- Examination of cultural and social challenges to accessing maternity care in a global setting
- Analysing the role of women’s and/or human rights and feminism in the global maternal health
- Evaluating the implications of infectious and non-communicable diseases on maternal and newborn health in a low resource setting
Course learning outcomes
- Critically analyse and evaluate global health initiatives.
- Critically discuss the challenges facing maternal and newborn health services and the implications for midwifery and/or maternity nursing practice.
- Evaluate the impact and burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases on global maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity.
- Examine the differences in management of a maternal and/or newborn health care issue between countries
- Demonstrate effective communication, analytical, leadership, diagnostic and evaluative skills
