Understanding the basics: what is Yoti?
Yoti is a secure digital technology verification platform that allows individuals to prove their identity online and in-person. It offers a convenient and reliable way to verify your identity and share personal information securely.
Yoti enables you to create a digital identity check by scanning your passport document and taking a selfie. This information is then encrypted and stored securely and used to verify your documents for checking your right to work in the UK.
Who can use Yoti?
You can use Yoti to complete your right to work check if you are a UK/Irish national with a current passport.
Why are we using a digital provider?
Conducting right to work checks is a legal requirement to ensure that candidates have the legal right to work in the UK. Yoti streamlines this process by providing a secure and efficient way for candidates to provide their right to work documentation with the added convenience of being able to provide documentation from home.
What does Yoti check for?
Yoti checks the following:
Your selfie
- Liveness authenticity - that a real person is taking the selfie
Your passport
- Age estimation/DoB comparison to selfie
- Document in date
- Document recognition
- Fraud list check
- Hologram on document/hologram movement
- Machine readable zone check (MRZ)
- Signs of forgery
- Signs of tampering
- Optical character recognition (ORZ) to MRZ comparison: date of birth, expiration date, gender, issuing country and name matches
- Physical document capture
- Portrait integrity
- Identity fraud
How long is my data stored?
Your documents will be stored on the Yoti platform for 3 months, after which they will be destroyed. They will be stored by the University for the duration of your employment and in line with the University of Nottingham privacy notice.

What if I don’t want to use the digital provider, or can’t?
If for any reason you don’t wish to, or can't verify your identity using the digital provider, your check can be completed manually by your hiring manager instead. This check will be in person with the original documents. It will also need to take place in advance of your start date, as contract details can’t be issued until your check is complete. Please liaise with your hiring manager in regards to completing your in person right to work check.
