Professor Javaid Rehman, UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, visited HRLC

On Friday 22 March, HRLC was honoured to host Professor Javaid Rehman, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in Iran, for an event entitled Academic Freedom In Context.

The event was convened to coincide with the end this year’s Scholars At Risk student placement. This academic year, after becoming the first UK university to have a SAR Student Group in 2017, HRLC has been supervising a group UoN students campaigning for the release of imprisoned Iranian scholar, Dr AhmadReza Djalali. At the event, the students presented their petition to Professor Rehman, which can still be accessed on our website alongside further information about Dr Djalali’s case.

Professor Rehman then presented his recent report on the human rights situation in Iran and provided his own insights on Dr Djalali’s case and more broadly on the challenges facing academic freedom in Iran.

This year, in addition to SAR campaigning, HRLC supervised UoN PhD student Naomi Lott in the drafting of SAR’s submission to Iran’s Universal Periodic Review that will take place later this year.

HRLC plans to continue with Professor Rehman to support the important work of his mandate.
