Current Research

My current research deals with the perioikoi from coastal Lakonia during the period of Spartan influence over the region (roughly from the mid-sixth century to the early-second century BC). I intend to paint a more accurate picture of how much ancient Laconians were connected both to maritime and mainland networks, hopefully identifying and comparing the level of proximity maintained by Laconian coastal settlements both with Sparta and with other Aegean or even Mediterranean societies. The main goal is to question the recurring idea that the periokoi were merely parts/provinces of a Spartan state, parts whose main function was to provide Sparta with its needs (from commercial to defensive ones) and lacked agency and interests of their own.
