Ancient Languages

Learning Latin and Greek does not just allow you to read classical texts. Languages offer a special access to cultures and identities of the past. Language modules are available for all students at Nottingham who take degrees with a Classics or Ancient History component. It does not matter what your linguistic abilities are or what previous experience you have, you can take either or both Latin and Greek at beginners, intermediate or advanced level.

The beginners’ stream is taught intensively so that a good standard is achieved during your time at University: you will start with learning about nouns and end up reading entire texts! The intermediate level module is for those who have taken the Year 1 for Beginners or have already done some classical language learning at school. The advanced level module is for those who have progressed from intermediate or have done an A-level in the subject. The advanced module in particular integrates language learning with the study of literature, history and culture of the ancient world. We aim for a balance between prose and verse and for a wide range of different genres, periods and styles of Latin and Greek.
