Jessica is a final-year PhD student in the Department of History supported by the ESRC-funded Midlands Doctoral Training Partnership. She is supervised by Dr Nick Baron and Professor Sarah Badcock (both University of Nottingham). Her MA in Social Science Research Methods was completed at Nottingham in 2018-2019. She previously studied Russian and Political Science at the University of Birmingham.
Jessica is currently working on her doctoral thesis entitled 'Counting the Soviet Nation: Population Politics Under Brezhnev, 1964-1982'. The research explores social responses to changing population structures in the Soviet Union through oral histories and archival research. The thesis examines the use and censorship of demographic statistics, with particular emphasis on fertility differences between ethnic populations and the politics of rising mortality. More broadly the research relates to relates to wider themes of population politics, scientific expertise, state governance and socioeconomic development in multi-ethnic states. This project has led to the publication of two recent peer-reviewed articles.
