Protect your data

Key steps for you to keep your data safe at the University.

We do everything we can to keep you and our services safe, but it is also vitally important that you take steps to protect your data. We are reliant on your assessment of how important the information is to your department and your local knowledge of working practices and people.

The data that you are responsible for can take various forms:

  • Paper files and local systems
  • Electronic files
  • Files shared by a third party (such as a research or commercial partner)

Further information about protecting data is available on the Information Security and Compliance Sharepoint site.

Backing up your data

You should store your data on University approved storage, such as OneDriveSharePoint and Teams.

Keeping Research data safe

The Digital Research Team provides help and guidance for keeping research data safe.

Data security while travelling

Top tips for keeping your data safe whilst travelling are available on the Information Security and Compliance SharePoint site.

Encrypt your device

Encrypting a device ensures any data that is stored on it is kept secure, making it difficult for others to access and view the data.

If you have a University-owned device, it will already be encrypted. If you have a personal device, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions to set up encryption on it.
