PhD Studentship: AMSCI funded project in partnership with Rockwell Collins: GNSS Signal Authentication

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) Positioning Navigation and Timing (PNT) faces threats from a variety of sources, including interference and spoofing. In the area of spoofing, considerable research has been published in the area of signal encryption, such as navigation message authentication. Rockwell Collins Advanced Technology Center has developed techniques that rely on GNSS receiver clock stability to detect the presence of spoofing signals by observing induced clock errors (that are principally induced by relative motion between the target receiver and the spoofing source). Research topics derived from this could include the refinement of the clock-based stability concept for different application domains, including development of the logic for detection, isolation, etc.Assessment of performance for different clock technologies, etc. would be needed.This basic work would then be extended to include other means of authentication such as changes to the GNSS receiver baseband processing, inertial integration, use of antenna arrays and adaptive processing, and collaborative approaches with networks of users.

Applications are invited for fully funded PhD studentships in the Nottingham Geospatial Institute at the University of Nottingham. There is currently an available position, which are being funded by under the AMSCI project with Rockwell Collins.

Successful applicants will be based at Nottingham and will:

  • Work directly with leading academics and industrial partners from the GNSS supply chain
  • Have the opportunity to undertake a secondment with the lead industrial partner (Rockwell Collins)
  • Receive a travel and consumables allowance to support the research project

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a first-class or upper second-class Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, such as engineering or physics. Students with a background in GNSS are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates should be self-motivated and capable of studying under pressure to meet deliverables. They should also have good communication skills for regular interaction with other stakeholders. Previous experience in GNSS algorithms and software and strong programming skills (MATLAB, C++ etc) would be advantageous.


Successful applicants will receive a tax free bursary of up to £14,296 p.a. and tuition fees for three years, subject to satisfactory research progress. This level of funding is for UK and EU applicants, although international students (USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand only) are eligible to apply with their own funding. Tuition fees (£19,120 p.a.) for international students will be paid, but no stipend is offered. Candidates should be available to start as soon as possible.
