Applications are invited to lead and develop research programmes on two-phase flow for aero-engine oil systems.The appointee will join the Gas Turbine & Transmissions Research Centre (G2TRC) as part of a team of 50 and will be expected to take the lead on film modelling using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) activities in Prof. Morvan’s team.This research group works closely with Rolls-Royce, through the long established University Technology Centre (UTC) in Gas Turbine Transmission Systems, and has taken part in many EU, IUK and ATI funded research programs.
The current post arises from the EU-Funded Clean Sky 2 core partnership (AERIS), for which a senior research fellow is required. In addition, key film modelling and oil systems activities will also materialise in the newly launched EPSRC Prosperity Partnership, Cornerstone, which the successful candidate will also help shape and influence. Experience of two-phase flow with heat transfer and techniques such as wall-based thin-film models, enhanced LS-VOF and Lagrangian particle simulation, and a good grasp of the numerics behind these, is essential. The researcher will join a team dedicated to advancing the G2TRC two-phase flow CFD mission and will also be tasked with coordinating other research works carried out by junior Research Fellows, offering supervision aid and pastoral care to PhD students. The appointee will be expected to help manage staff and students working on CFD projects. The clear ability to deliver consistently high quality journal papers is required. Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent, in engineering, applied mathematics or a related subject area, with a major component in fluid modelling or using CFD. The applicant must be able to demonstrate that they can develop CFD models, implement them in code and undertake complex CFD studies. Practical CFD experience with ANSYS FLUENT is very important; in particular, experience in two-phase modelling, thin film models, VOF and meshing systems, UDF/UDM implementation for advanced models. The ability to work in a team, lead, internally and externally, and interact/collaborate actively and professionally with industrial partners is essential as this project will operate in close collaboration with colleagues in the UTC and at Rolls-Royce. Working on AERIS, it is essential that the successful applicant is able to actively support knowledge exchange and transfer activities with Rolls-Royce.
This full-time post is available immediately and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 24 months.
