University of Nottingham invites applications for a Thermal Research Engineer to join our exciting collaboration with Motor Design Limited (MDL), a young, dynamic business at the forefront of motor design innovation and technology.
Based at MDL in Wrexham, you will have a unique opportunity to lead the delivery of a project to develop fast and accurate modelling capability to simulate and design oil spray cooling systems for the next generation of electric traction motors.
As an enthusiastic graduate, this is an exciting opportunity for you to manage a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). Fully supported by the university, you will be instrumental in delivering a high-profile project within a specific time-frame.
A key aspect of your role will be to transfer the latest science-based research in the thermal characterisation of ultra-high power density machines to identify, implement and embed new technologies, practices and processes into the company for commercial delivery. You will engage with the company’s partners and customers throughout the project to ensure that the technologies implemented are aligned with MDL’s customer requirements. An awareness of commercial drivers and previous industrial experience is desirable, but not essential.
You should hold an MSc, MEng or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (thermal, automotive or aerospace engineering). You should have a strong understanding of different electrical machines and be capable of understanding thermo-mechanic effects in electrical machines. You should have good knowledge from your work in a similar or related role within an industrial, scientific or research environment.
As a people-orientated individual, you will have the ability to influence and engage collaboratively between the teams at MDL and the University of Nottingham. As a proactive person, you will have the passion and desire for creating something new and be enthusiastic and motivated to organise your own time effectively and have a flexible approach to prioritising tasks and work.
Through KTP, you will be given the support and mentoring you need to nurture your talent. You will have your own budget for training and CPD to help you develop your current skillset and reach your personal and professional career goals.
University of Nottingham is committed to providing competitive employment packages whilst supporting the well-being of our staff to help them reach their full potential. As a University employee, you will have access to the resources of the university as well as a range of benefits and rewards, including staff discounts and travel schemes and a highly attractive pension scheme.
This is a fixed term contract for 26 months funded through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership, a UK Government scheme promoting sustained and mutually beneficial relationships between universities and industry. It is hoped there will be a permanent position available on project completion.
The post is offered on a full time basis (36.25 hours per week) and job share arrangements may be considered.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr David Gerada at: D.Gerada@nottingham.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
