Trent Building

Director of Health and Safety Assurance

The University of Nottingham is a world-class university which is a compelling and enriching place to work.  Significant in its impact and substantial in size and complexity, and with over 9,000 staff and 49,000 students across campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, the university delivers global impact through its research and teaching and learning.

Thank you for your interest in this important strategic leadership opportunity. This is a crucial role for the University to develop and deliver our Health and Safety strategy, policies, and assurance framework to ensure that we maintain and operate a safe and compliant environment across all campuses.

As an inspirational role model, you will lead and motivate the health and safety function to identify and manage risks effectively and foster a culture for safety management across the university.

To be successful, you must have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the health and safety regulatory framework, and able to provide assurance and accurate reporting to our executive committees and external stakeholders in the governance arena.

I am looking for someone with proven interpersonal skills who can influence and negotiate at the highest levels to effectively manage and mitigate risks for our university. You must also be able to work collaboratively with others to deliver change programmes and health and safety awareness training to maximise the impact of health and safety strategies.

I very much look forward to receiving your application.

Jason Carter
Director of Governance and Assurance

The role

As our new Director of Health and Safety Assurance you will lead on the development and implementation of the University’s Health and Safety strategy, policies, and assurance programme to ensure that we maintain and operate a safe and compliant environment for all staff, students, and visitors.

This is a critical role for the University with an emphasis on leading and developing the current Health and Safety function to ensure that policies and procedures are in place to identify and mitigate health and safety related risks efficiently and effectively.

Working collaboratively with our estates and facilities colleagues, you will ensure that our large campus environments are safe and foster a safety management culture across our university community. This will include sitting on our overseas campus committees to develop and implement consistent health and safety protocols and assurance procedures.

You will manage our relationship with University Council and the Audit Risk Committee and maintain relationships with relevant external networks to enable the University to remain at the forefront of developments in this area.

You will bring a successful track record of strategic health and safety leadership within higher education or in a similar large and complex environment and have experience and commitment to the development and delivery of health and safety assurance.
