Modern Standard Arabic Evening Classes


We are currently offering Level 1 and 2 in Modern Standard Arabic. Please see below for more information about each of the levels on offer.
 

Arabic Level 1

This class is aimed at students who have no previous knowledge of the language.

Duration

  • 20 weeks 

Day and Time

  • Monday 6-8pm

Term Dates 

Term 1:
Start: week commencing 7 October 2019
End: week commencing 9 December 2019

Term 2:
Start: week commencing 27 January 2020
End: week commencing 30 March 2020

Venue

Trent Building, University Park Campus

Costs

Course fees

  • University of Nottingham Students: £260 (paid in two instalments of £130).
  • Staff and Members of the Public: £280 (paid in two instalments of £140).

Exam fees

There is an optional end of year assessment which involves an additional £10 exam fee.

The exam is compulsory for students taking the classes as part of the Nottingham Advantage Award but no charge is made.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Exchange simple greetings 
  • Introduce themselves and other people 
  • Give personal information about family, job or studies, where they live 
  • Give the same information about other people 
  • Use numbers 1-100, express dates, time, prices 
  • Shop for food 
  • Order meals and drinks 
  • Give directions 
  • Talk about the weather 
  • Book holiday accommodation

Grammatical structures

The grammatical structures covered in Arabic Level 1 are: 

  • The Alphabet
  • Joining up letters groups 1-6
  • Adding the three short vowels to the letters
  • Long vowels
  • Making words plural
  • Possessive endings
  • Sun letters
  • The genitive case
  • Idafa constructions
  • Arabic numbers 1-10
  • The accusative case
  • Hamza
  • Verbs in the past
  • What happened yesterday
  • Structure notes: plural and dual case endings
  • Greetings/The Family/Jobs/Describing your town/Shopping

The textbook used is Mastering Arabic 1.

If you are confident at using most of the structures, please look at Level 2.

 

Arabic Level 2

This class is aimed at students who have completed the Arabic Level 1 evening class or who have an equivalent amount of previous knowledge.

  • 20 weeks 

Day and Time

  •  Thursday 6-8pm

Term Dates 

Term 1:
Start: week commencing 7 October 2019
End: week commencing 9 December 2019

Term 2:
Start: week commencing 27 January 2020
End: week commencing 30 March 2020

  • Numbers 11-19 and 20-100
  • Countable nouns with numbers 11 upwards
  • Past verbs in the plural
  • Plural patterns 5
  • Word order
  • Singular vs. plural verbs
  • Idafa structure
  • Telling the time
  • Negating statements
  • Present tense structures
  • Verb forms II, III, IV
  • Was vs. were
  • Weak verbs
  • Verb forms V and VI
  • Talking about holidays/Education at school and at university/Eating and drinking/Comparing things

The textbook used is Mastering Arabic 1.
