I have an interest in teaching interdisciplinary sessions that allows students to explore issues that mark the past, present and future. The liberal arts modules that I convene are designed to engage students with the wealth of information and perspectives that the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences provide and to utilise these to ask innovative and critical questions. I also have teaching interests in the First World War, New York, heritage studies, memory and urban history and I supervise student projects that cross disciplinary boundaries.

My teaching is informed by my research and scholarship in history, South Asian politics, transnational migration, gender, queer studies, memory and identity. The liberal arts modules I convene invite students to engage critically with an interconnected world, where new ideas, people and goods circulate in complex ways. Students will explore broad themes and global issues, such as migration, climate change, power and resistance, from multiple disciplinary perspectives. They will also learn collaboration, creativity and self-directed learning – all critical skills for thriving in the twenty-first century.

The liberal arts modules I convene open up a space where critical thinking meets creativity, where we can explore how the way that we feel, emotionally and physically, can be used to reflect on the world around us. My interest in feeling stems from my background in creative writing, literature, visual and material cultures. I’m fascinated by how our feelings shape our everyday lives in subtle and powerful ways, and how writers, thinkers, artists, politicians, scientists, and the media all engage emotion and feeling – some openly, some overtly – to influence the way we see the world. Being able to navigate these currents of feeling is crucial to communication across cultures, building relationships with our social, cultural, and spatial environments, and to understanding and expressing ourselves.

The Liberal Arts team explore more about what liberal arts means on our blog
All of our optional subject areas have an academic link for the liberal arts programme. They'll be able to help you around subject queries and modules in that area.
