Responsible use of indicators: a toolkit
This toolkit is collaboratively maintained by University of Nottingham Libraries and Research and Innovation to provide:
- transparency on use of indicators
- guidance on if / how to develop new processes including indicators.
Planning use of indicators
If you are an academic drawing on indicators in your decision making, or a member of professional services staff considering integrating indicators into a process, please check out our downloadable guides. These will help you assess the pros and cons of indicator use, and understand indicator limitations and alternative options.
You can also contact our specialists for targeted advice. The contact email is within University of Nottingham Libraries but we will refer your query to colleagues in Research and Innovation where appropriate.
Use of indicators at University of Nottingham UK
Following the signing of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), a University working group was convened to consider how to embed the principles for the responsible use of publication indicators when assessing research outputs. Advice on good practice is available and the plans and recommendations of the working group can be accessed upon sign-in.
Examples of good practice
One simple example could be changing the emphasis from “research papers in high impact journals” to “contributions to high quality and impactful research”. The DORA website lists good practice examples of funders and research institutes.
