Microbes started the tree of life and they will be the last survivors on the planet. The human race has always been at war with microbes and infectious disease is one of the few genuine adventures left in the world. I have had a long-standing interest in microbial life cycles and their mechanism of action. I obtained my undergraduate degree in General Microbiology and completed M.Sc. and Ph.D. program in Molecular and Clinical Microbiology from the University of Nottingham. My research interests include developing and promoting best infection practice guidelines, antimicrobial stewardship, medical education, quality improvement in infection management, and clinical and health economic outcomes in relation to new antibiotics and emerging pathogens. I am also very interested in defining the role of bacterial virulence factors in host-pathogen interaction and identifying their host receptors for possible vaccine and novel antibiotics candidates.

Research Summary

Characterising the role of potential accessory factors that facilitate secretion of the EspC and AaaA autotransporters

Autotransporter proteins are the super-family of bacterial secreted proteins and act as virulence factors that help the bacteria to evade immune system.The autotransporter secreted by Enteropathogenic E. coli, EspC, is localised in a specific manner as it is secreted from EPEC. ThePseudomonas aeruginosa autotransporter virulence factor (AaaA) follows a similar route out of the bacterium. My current research PhD project would use fluorescently tagged versions of EspC and AaaA to follow their localisation as they interact with host cell targets.
