Based in the Royal Derby Hospital, the division accommodates over 120 University staff and enjoys excellent links with the Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Academic staff include basic scientists, clinicians and health professionals.
We balance internationally-acclaimed research with high-quality teaching and nurture the next generation of doctors and scientists.
Our Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme allows people from a wide diversity of backgrounds to become Foundation Year doctors within 4-years. In addition we host the first year of a six-year undergraduate programme specifically designed to open up medicine to students from under-represented groups. Our BSc in Medical Physiology and Therapeutics provides a route for students who wish to study alongside Graduate Entry Medicine students. Graduates from this course pursue a wide-range of careers, including research, biotechnology and medicine.
There is an emphasis on clinical and translational research, spanning molecular mechanisms through to clinical trials. Active research areas in our division include human ageing, muscle physiology, nephrology, endocrinology, vascular medicine, women’s health, paediatrics and surgery. Above all, we are motivated by a culture where all our students and staff are supported to develop to their greatest potential
