Biography

Current responsibilities are to develop the translational research programme within the Pain Centre Versus Arthritis and to have responsibility for PPI/E research support and specific research projects using systematic review and meta-analysis. To contribute to the expansion of the Centre's research activities by, supporting other investigators in developing and facilitating collaborations, identifying research opportunities, preparing grant applications and publications, coordinating the annual Versus Arthritis Pain Research in the UK Conference and providing leadership in Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement.

Expertise Summary

A highly experienced researcher in veterinary and translational medicine, with extensive experience in the conduct of systematic reviews and health technology assessments, and project and programme management. A skilled research facilitator and communicator with a successful track record in building interdisciplinary research consortia and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders (veterinarians, medical professionals, industry, patients, etc). In her current role, at the University of Nottingham Pain Centre Versus Arthritis, she is utilising these skills building research collaborative networks, organising conferences, and disseminating research findings to a wide range of stakeholder groups. She also contributes to systematic reviews and meta-analyses within the department and is the Lead for the MSK Patient and public involvement and engagement activities and the Patient Advisory and Insight Group.

Julie started her research career as a Research Associate for the MARS family based at the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition (now the Waltham Petcare Science Institute), managing research trials in translational medicine including areas of behaviour, urinary tract health, nutrition, olfactory development, environmental enrichment, and vascular health. Julie also held a position on the WCPN Research Ethics committee for 5 years advising on animal welfare and study design.

Following a PhD and postdoctoral work in Veterinary Epidemiology and Evidence-based and practice-based research with the University of Nottingham Centre for Evidence based Veterinary Medicine, Julie was awarded a University of Nottingham BESTS Travel Scholarship to work with leading commercial partners The Banfield Pet Hospital in the US. In 2014 Julie joined the NHS East Midlands Academic Health Science Network to broaden her knowledge of healthcare research working on projects to inform service design and patient care across the East Midlands. She also project managed a large core outcomes initiative to identify outcome measures and instruments for Tinnitus with the Hearing BRC.

During her 3-year NIHR HTA Research Fellowship in Evidence Synthesis at University of York, Julie assisted with reviews assessing the effectiveness, costs, and broader impact of health technology and interventions in human and animal health including diagnostic tests, pharmaceuticals, devices, and procedures. Julie has contributed to reviews of Regenerative medicine, Dermatology, Complex Trauma, Phantom limb pain, diagnostic methods for Osteomyelitis and international evidence map of research and systematic review on the incidence and surveillance of lyme disease to advise UK policy.

Her subsequent positions further consolidated her programme management skills and extended her involvement in systematic reviews, contributing to the teaching of systematic review protocol design and registration at the University of York. Her work on the NIHR-funded PROSPERO Register included project management, design of the database, and extending the registration database to PROSPERO for Animal Studies to include pre-clinical systematic review registration.
