Final-year student presents on widening participation at ASME 2017

Congratulations to Catriona Boyd, one of our final-year students, who was selected to present on widening participation at the annual conference of the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) held in Exeter last week. Catriona is President of the Widening Access to Medical School (WAMS) student society at the University of Nottingham.

Her presentation was about the WAMS Work Experience scheme which enables prospective medical students to shadow medical students on placement, focussing on how this opportunity benefits the students as well as its value as a widening participation initiative.

The presentation was originally submitted as a poster but subsequently upgraded to a presentation.

"Widening participation is my main passion and my main goal was to spread the message about this scheme to encourage other medical schools to set a similar one up as part of a WP project," she said. "In terms of my career plans, I am interested in becoming a teaching fellow and getting involved in medical education in the future. I also hope to remain involved in WP schemes, no matter where it is I end up."
