Mara Ozolins

Medical Statistician with NCTU, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences

After gaining an MSc in Statistics at Sheffield University Mara worked for 12 years as a statistician in the pharmaceutical industry, in a variety of medical areas. In 1997 she changed direction and managed clinical trials with the University of Nottingham, working on two large multi-centre trials, the first a community-based trial in acne, and the second a hospital-based trial in basal cell carcinoma (a common skin cancer). Alongside her trial management Mara has delivered occasional lectures in trial management and statistical topics and in 2007 achieved associate teacher status. Mara joined the NIHR Nottingham Hearing BRU in September 2012 as a research fellow, working for two and a half years on an HTA project evaluating the school entry hearing screen, published as an HTA monograph. Mara then provided research governance and monitoring support in NHBRU for two years. She has now moved full circle, and started working as a medical statistician in the Nottingham CTU, with a wide variety of skills behind her.

Expertise Summary

Mara's expertise lies in medical research (mainly clinical trials), including trial design, methods, conduct, data management, analysis and presentation. Much of this experience has been in dermatology, some also in hearing research, but in industry she worked in many different fields of medicine; her research skills and experience are broadly transferable.

Past Research

I coordinated an HTA funded trial of antimicrobial treatments for acne. My role included creation of the database and an analysis of the data. That was followed by managing the SINS trial (Surgery vs Imiquimod for Nodular and Superficial BCC) of 501 participants, then research work on an NIHR HTA project evaluating the school entry hearing screen (SES).
