Research Summary

Identifying young carers of stroke survivors in the East Midlands and exploring their needs.

The study is investigating the lives of children and young people aged up to 25 years who provide help and support for family members or close friends who are stroke survivors.

There are now estimated to be around 1.2 million stroke survivors living in the UK with increasing numbers living in their own home supported by family members and friends. We do not know how many of these supporters are children (under 18 years) or young adults (under 25 years). Very little is known about these young people and no UK studies have been found specifically related to young people supporting stroke survivors.

The study is examining how supporting a stroke survivor affects the young person from the perspective of the stroke survivors, and the children and young people themselves. The viewpoints of people experienced in supporting young carers are also being explored as no stroke specific projects or services for this group of children and young people exist. It is envisaged that the study may lead to the development of interventions in the future to help children and young people who support family members or close friends who are stroke survivors.
