  • WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION

UKERNA and the University of Nottingham would like to welcome you to Networkshop 30. We hope that this conference lives up to the high standards set in previous years. This is actually the second Networkshop to be held at the University of Nottingham but the fact that the CamTec X.25 PAD was demonstrated at the previous one shows that it was some time ago. A lot has changed in the years since 1982 and the pace of change has not abated. Networkshop is always an opportunity to catch up on what other sites are doing, what technologies may be around the corner and where the industry and community are going.

This guide contains the programme of events, exhibition plan, exhibitor descriptions and a map of the campus. All residential delegates will be staying in Rutland and Cavendish Halls, both of which are a short distance from the East Midlands Conference Centre (EMCC).

Please wear your name badge at all times in the EMCC and ensure that any bags or cases carry some identification.

The Networkshop bag contains the conference proceedings and items supplied by the sponsors of this year's event. We would like to thank all sponsors for their generosity and hope that all delegates make time to visit the exhibition area.

Finally, we hope that you enjoy our beautiful campus and we are delighted to welcome Networkshop back to Nottingham!

    HALLS OF RESIDENCE

All delegates will be accommodated in single, en-suite rooms at either Rutland or Cavendish Hall of Residence. Both Halls are only a few minutes walk from the EMCC - see campus plan.

Delegates may check-in to their rooms from 11.30am on Tuesday 26 March. Please go to the Porter's Desk/Reception in your Hall where you will be given the key to your room. Please note all outside doors are accessed via a security code which will be given to you at Reception.

Bedding, towels and toiletries will be provided in bedrooms. Additional toiletries, sundries and postage stamps are available for purchase from the Porter, who can also lend guests hairdryers and irons if required. Tea and coffee making facilities are available in your room or in pantries close by.

Full English breakfast will be served in your Hall from 7.30am - 9.00am each day.

All study bedrooms will have telephone service available during the conference. Internal calls (within campus) are free and external calls can be made by buying an ntl chargecard from the Hall Manager or Porter (available in £3, £5 or £10 denominations). Please note, only ntl chargecards will work. Emergency calls (fire, police, ambulance) can be made by dialling 2222, Security can be contacted on 13013 and the Cripps Health Centre can be contacted by dialling 75.

Should you require assistance at any time during your stay, ask the Porter, or if the desk is unmanned (out of hours) a notice will be displayed showing the duty manager's contact number.

    DEPARTURE

Delegates are asked to vacate their room by 10.00am on the day of departure. Facilities will be available for the storage of luggage - please ask the Porter; there will also be a room set aside for this purpose at the EMCC.

    CAR PARKING

Car parking on campus is free to conference delegates. There is a large car park adjacent to the EMCC. Smaller car parks are available at each Hall of Residence, both of which are within easy walking distance of the EMCC.

All vehicles and their contents are left at the owner's risk - the campus is patrolled 24 hours a day but you are asked to take sensible precautions, even on campus.

    SECURITY

The University Security Office is located in Trent Building close to the East Car Park. It is staffed 24 hours. The internal telephone number is 13013.

    HEALTH

Should you need to consult a doctor during your stay, the Cripps Health Centre will be open between 8.15 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.

If you are a UK resident and staying on campus you will have `temporary resident' status.

For assistance you can call the Cripps Health Centre on extension 75 from an internal telephone, or ask at the Information Desk (EMCC), to make an appointment or check the recorded message for out-of-hours emergency procedures.

The pharmacy on campus is NOT open during the vacation and hence will not be available during the conference. There are several pharmacists nearby in Beeston. For out-of-hours service please ask at the Information Desk for the rota for the area.

For more serious accidents and emergencies, the nearest A&E department is located at the University Hospital, Queen's Medical Centre. If you require an emergency service - police, fire, ambulance - on campus, please dial 2222 from an internal telephone.

    EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

In the event of fire or accident please follow these instructions:

    On discovering a fire:
    1. Raise the alarm by operating the nearest break-glass call point
    2. Dial 2222 on the nearest internal telephone stating the location
    3. Attack the fire with the nearest appropriate extinguisher if safe to do so and your escape route is clear

    On hearing the fire alarm:
    1. Leave the building immediately - do not use lifts or stop to collect personal belongings
    2. Close all windows and doors when leaving
    3. Report to the building's assembly point
For all emergencies please contact the Security Office in the first instance on ext. 2222 or 13013. Security will then meet and direct emergency services on campus.

Please report accidents or ill health to the Information Desk.

    TELEPHONES

Please see the section `Halls of Residence' for information on telephones in Hall bedrooms.

In the event of urgent messages and emergencies, callers can leave messages on: 0115 84 68484 (the Networkshop Information Desk in the EMCC).. Non-urgent messages will be posted on the Notice Board near to the Customer Services Desk. We will use the public address system in the EMCC to call delegates to the Information Desk to collect urgent messages.

It is expected that many delegates will carry mobile telephones. Out of courtesy to speakers and other delegates we would ask that these be switched off, or set to silent mode, during all conference sessions and during other presentations (such as at the Conference Dinner).

    NETWORK ACCESS

There will be a small number of PCs connected to the University network and SuperJANET available for delegates to access their mail. These will be sited in Conference Room 3 and will have the usual web browsers, telnet and ssh clients on them. The room will be open throughout the conference, whenever the EMCC is open.

Each bedroom in the Halls has an RJ45 ethernet point. If you have come with a laptop, ethernet card and UTP cable, you might be able to connect to the Internet from your room. During termtime, IP addresses are issued only for known registered MAC addresses. We will try to have a DHCP server running for the duration of the conference but cannot guarantee it at the time of writing this guide. Note that external access (if it is available) may be through the commercial ISP that we use for the students' traffic, not SuperJANET.

    MEALS AND REFRESHMENTS

Breakfast will be served in the dining room of your Hall of Residence each morning from 7.30am - 9.00am.

Mid-morning and mid-afternoon refreshments will be served in the Exhibition Suite.

A buffet lunch will be served each day (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) in the Marquee adjacent to the EMCC. Access into the Marquee is via the Exhibition Suite.

A buffet supper will be served in the Marquee at the EMCC on Tuesday night.

Delegates who have to rush off on Thursday to catch trains, planes, or get back to the office, may opt to order a packed lunch to take with them. If you have not already done so, please order this through the Information Desk soon after your arrival.

    (see programme for times please)

We know that several companies will be launching new products or services, and whilst there are a number of old friends, there are some first time exhibitors, to whom we extend a warm welcome.
