RLO: Childhood obesity

Conclusion

The approach currently favoured by government when tackling childhood obesity is the behavioural or public health approach. However, this approach  does have significant weaknesses.

Focussing on the individual and / or their behaviour in isolation will not affect change. If we are to meet targets set to reduce the proportion of overweight children to 2000 levels by the year 2020,  we’ll need to combine all three approaches to health promotion, recognising  - and working to overcome - the wider determinants of poor health.
