Francium

Nottingham element: Florence Boot

Florence was married to Jesse Boot, founder of Boots. An astute businesswoman she influenced the diversification of the original pharmaceutical trade to include books and fancy goods. She was also committed to staff welfare and in particular women’s rights and she introduced staff welfare officers and free breakfasts for Boots staff.

As a campaigner for women’s rights to Higher Education, Florence founded the first women’s hall of residence at University Park- Florence Boot Hall.

The most expensive and second rarest natural element.

Francium was discovered by Marguerite Perey in France (from which the element takes its name) in 1939

It is a heavy element with a single valence electron, with the highest equivalent weight of any element
