Nottingham element: Rushcliffe

Rushcliffe is a local government district in Nottinghamshire. Its council, Rushcliffe Borough Council, is based in West Bridgford and was formed in 1974.

The district was named after the old Rushcliffe wapentake, which was an administrative area equivalent to a hundred. Rushcliffe means ‘cliff where brushwood grows’ from the Old English.

The Member of Parliament for the parliamentary constituency of Rushcliffe is the Conservative, Kenneth Clarke.

Scientific element: Ruthenium

Ruthenium is a hard, white element that is a member of the platinum metals group.

Discovered in 1844, its most common purpose is for creating a coating of wear-resistance.

Its name derives from Ruthenia, the Latin word for Russia.
