The department provides a vibrant intellectual environment for its large community of postgraduate students. It leads the Centre for Critical Theory and is home to the Institute for Screen Industries Research, benefiting from key industry links with Fox Searchlight, Dolby, and Red Bee Media. The department also spearheads The University of Nottingham's lead higher education partnership with the British Film Institute.

The department also works together with the Centre for Contemporary East-Asian Cultural Studies, which was founded in March 2012. The centre facilitates innovative research into and critical debate on cultural thinking and practices related to China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea as well as associated diasporic communities around the world.

Research students come to Nottingham from the UK and overseas, including the EU, the Middle and Far East, Latin America and the United States. With their diversity of cultural and disciplinary backgrounds, they constitute a rich, rewarding and supportive postgraduate body. The department has more than 40 students currently enrolled, either full-time or part-time.
