Biography
After completing her MPharm degree at the University of Nottingham in 2008, Abigail L. Emtage undertook her pre-registration training in the hospital pharmacy sector at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Shortly after qualifying as a pharmacist, she returned to the University of Nottingham to commence her PhD, which was funded by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (formerly the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain Academic Excellence Award programme). In 2014, Dr Emtage graduated with her doctorate, and was appointed Assistant Professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.
Dr Emtage's research interests are in the field of medicinal chemistry and structural biology, with an emphasis on computational modelling and drug design. Her current research seeks to further explore the molecular dynamics and ligand binding capabilities of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs); the beta-adrenergic receptors and cannabinoid receptors in particular.
As well as engaging in research, Dr Emtage takes an active interest in pharmacy and pharmacy education; she took on the role of MPharm 2+2 Programme Director in 2017, and contributes to a variety of teaching over multiple degree programmes and modules (core subjects include, but are not limited to, medicinal chemistry, biology, and pharmacy practice). Dr Emtage maintains her professional registration as a pharmacist in the UK, occasionally undertaking external work in the community pharmacy sector outside of term time.
Teaching Summary

Dr Emtage contributes to both the Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) and BSc Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences (PHS) degrees in the areas of medicinal chemistry, biology, and pharmacy practice. Both degrees involve a wide range of teaching and assessment styles: teaching is delivered via lectures, workshops, practical classes and case studies; assessments, both formative and summative, often take the form of essay style exam questions, multiple choice exam questions, coursework assignments, laboratory reports, or OSCEs. As the MPharm 2+2 Programme Director Dr Emtage also sits on the School's Teaching and Learning Committee and Chairs the student Learning Community Forum.
