Catherine obtained a First Class (Hons) BSc degree in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Loughborough University and also gained one year industrial experience at Pfizer at their site in Sandwich, Kent. During this year, Catherine worked in the solid dose manufacturing area on an individual research project entitled, "Broadening process understandings and improving process efficiency on the Bosch encapsulation machine" and gained experience working independently in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) area. Catherine joined the CDT in 2016 and undertook her first training project under the supervision of James Dixon, in the regenerative medicine department. She worked on a transfection protocol which was optimised to achieve zonal transfection using two different agents on the same scaffold, opening up potential for osteogenic differentiation within the same engineered scaffold. Her second training project was carried out at AstraZeneca at their Macclesfield site within the pharmaceutical development team. Here, Catherine looked into improving a whole host of API's amorphous properties and gained experience in various analytical techniques.

Catherine is currently in the second year of her PhD, investigating next-generation nanotherapeutics for neurosurgically applied tumour drug delivery, under the supervision of Dr. Ruman Rahman, Prof. Cameron Alexander and Dr. Stuart Smith. During her first year, she optimised a ring opening polymerisation procedure and successfully conjugated relevant chemotherapeutics and responsive linkers to the polymer backbone. Catherine is now looking to carry forward optimal formulations to test in vitro, and eventually, in vivo.
