Students on placement speak at Ministry of Defence conference

Amelia Balls and Jessica Byrne

Two placement students recently spoke at an event held by the Ministry of Defence and King's College London. The inaugural Deterrence and Assurance Academic Alliance Conference aimed to promote interest and growth in deterrence analysis and dialogue among UK academic institutions, official policy, strategy/research departments, and international partners.

Amelia Balls and Jessica Byrne both presented research papers at the conference, after interning at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), part of the Ministry of Defence.

Nicholas Taylor, Principal Analyst for Dstl and placement mentor, said: "Both Amelia and Jess presented very well indeed. They gave good presentations to a mixed audience of over 100 that included some very senior representatives such as senior military personnel and representatives from a number of countries, including keynote speaker Lord Robertson."

Amelia is studying BA Politics and History, while Jessica is studying BA German and Politics. Their placements were organised as part of the School of Politics and International Relations' placements programme and accredited Politics Placements module.
