As part of a growing collaboration with Leicester Diabetes Centre (a unique, collaborative partnership between the NHS and the University of Leicester), PRIMIS is pleased to be working on the D-Med Study. This important research aims to help clinical practice staff with prescribing responsibilities to reduce the proportion of potentially inappropriate diabetes medications prescribed in older people with type 2 diabetes and frailty.
Over-prescribing of medication can lead to blood sugar dropping to dangerous levels which increases the likelihood of falls, emergency hospital admissions and death.
PRIMIS has provided a decision support tool to assist GPs to stop, reduce or switch potentially inappropriate diabetes medications and is collecting outcomes data from participating practices on behalf of the research team.
The study involves the participation of 40 GP practices across England.
Findings expected to be made available by the Leicester Diabetes Centre by the end of 2023.
