My current research is dedicated to the improvement of thermal barrier coatings (TBC), applied at the hottest sections of any modern turbine engine: due to several reasons, such as high temperature, oxygen diffusion, foreign object damage, erosion, and others, the lifespan of the coatings is always limited due to irreversibility and inevitability of the processes.
In order to decrease the time-consuming maintenance frequency with components recoating, TBC macro- and microstructure can be enhanced via a high energy source, for instance, a laser beam. With such a tool it is possible to remelt the material, producing a dense and corrosion resistant surficial layer, remove material, creating patterns of gaps and relaxing thermal stresses, and also to use the ablation plume for material deposition.
