Biography

Dr. Paul Butler-Smith has an extensive background in the characterisation and application of ultra hard materials with more than 20 years experience gained with Element Six. After completing an MSc in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, he graduated with a PhD at the University of Nottingham. His research has focused on the laser ablation of diamond for the generation of precision micro tools and is continuing work in this area for the European Framework 7 Project, DIPLAT. His research interests cover non-conventional manufacture (e.g. lasers, focus ion beam), the mico/nanometric characterisation of diamond and related materials and their industrial applications.

Dr. Paul Butler-Smith is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Group.
