Current Research

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) utilises the electrical sparking phenomenon to remove material from metals that are conventionally difficult to machine. While EDM is used in industry to machine complex components, the process is not fully understood in terms of the effect of machining parameters and material combinations. I will be tackling issues and improving the process in terms of tool wear, material removal, and surface characteristics by experimental testing, evaluation, and simulation of different dielectrics, tool electrodes, and machining parameters. I will be proposing new machining strategies optimised for process parameters and material combinations, as well as defining new routes to optimum process conditions in new materials.
