Biography

Currently, Wahyudin P. Syam focuses on the development of a new information-rich-based micro-scale all optical CMM under the supervision of Prof. Richard Leach. The developed instrument is for surface texture and form measurements. In addition, he also develops an in-line measuring instrument for surface classification of additive manufactured surfaces.

He received his PhD from Politecnico di Milano in Milan, Italy, in January 2015. He conducted research in the field of geometrical (size & form) metrology under the supervision of Prof. Giovanni Moroni and Prof. Stefano Petro. His PhD thesis focused on uncertainty evaluation and performance verification of 3D geometric focus-variation measurement. In addition, the aspect of geometric fitting algorithms is included.

During his PhD period, he developed the understanding of ISO 1101 and ASME Y14.5 for GD&T, ISO 10360 series and ISO 15530 series as well as various types of geometric fitting algorithm. Moreover, skills on measurements using Tactile-CMM and Optical-CMM are obtained during his PhD period.

Before his PhD, additive manufacturing based on electron beam melting was his research field. Meanwhile, the exploration of design tools for additive manufacturing was carried out during some parts of his PhD period.

Current Research

Currently, Wahyudin's research focus is to develop information-rich-based micro-scale all optical CMM for surface texture and form measurements. Other research activities are the development of an in-line surface monitoring instrument for additive manufacturing processes and the use of additively lattice structure for precision engineering applications, for example vibration isolation.

Wahyudin is currently involved in EPSRC, MICROMAN H2020 and INNOVATE UK projects.

Past Research

During his PhD period, the focus of his research was the uncertainty estimation of measurement results (based on ISO15530 series) and performance evaluation (based on ISO10360 series) of a geometric (size and form) measuring instrument of focus-variation based optical-CMM. In addition, the problem of geometric fitting algorithms was also addressed.

Meanwhile, his master thesis focused on extending the application of electron beam melting-based additive manufacturing for dental application. Ti6Al4V material was used in the study. Moreover, in some time in his PhD, he conducted research in design tools for additive manufacturing in order to support the best use of AM capabilities for producing innovative parts.
