At the Manufacturing Metrology Team (MMT), our research focuses on advancing precision measurement technologies to meet the evolving demands of modern manufacturing.
Our core areas include surface and form metrology, in-process sensing, and the integration of machine learning for real-time measurement and feedback. We are also at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing and circular economy metrology, working to support greener, more efficient production systems. Additionally, our work in quantum metrology addresses next-generation measurement challenges, pushing the boundaries of accuracy and innovation in industrial applications.
Using rigorous modelling and manufacturing information, we work across all Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) to deliver bespoke optical measurement solutions for manufacturing tasks. Our research covers:
We have a substantial number of projects underway. Ranging from EPSRC funded projects, European funded projects, UoN funded projects, many designed and supported by our own PhDs and EngD students, and many past projects all cited below for you to read.
Investigation into the sources of uncertainty in the optical measurement of gears (2021-2024)
Determination of topography fidelity with optical surface texture measuring instruments (2020-2023)
