Biography

Gavin Walker is the Director for the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Hydrogen is a £12 M initiative to train the Energy Innovation Leaders needed in transitioning towards a net-zero future. It aims to investigate the hydrogen innovations needed to the technical and non-technical challenges for deep decarbonisation of the UK energy and transport sectors.

Walker has been working in the field of solid state hydrogen storage and hydrogen systems for over 20 years. In recognition of his research he received a Low Carbon Leadership award from the Carbon Trust and EPSRC in 2007 and in 2010 was appointed as the Sir Harry and Lady Djanogly Chair in Sustainable Energy.

From 2014 until 2019, Gavin Walker was Director of the University of Nottingham's Energy Technologies Research Institute (ETRI), which had over a £100 million portfolio of research, spanning efficient fossil energy, geoenergy, energy storage, renewable energy, smart grids and efficient energy buildings. In 2019, he became Director for SusHy.

Expertise Summary

Gavin Walker's research in the energy field started with investigations into materials for solid state storage of hydrogen. This work resulted in several collaborations which extended fundamental research to include investigations of the design of hydrogen stores, the development of renewable energy systems and the utilisation of waste heat to increase system efficiency. Current research includes solid state storage and compression for offshore hydrogen generation, novel hydrogen/cooling energy stores for the cold economy, the use of hydrogen for rural economies and the public acceptability of hydrogen in the home.

Future Research

There is great interest in producing high capacity hydrogen stores. Our work into hydrogen storage materials looks to continue this investigation and investigating the engineering of hydrogen systems based on solid state storage technology. Efficient integration of hydrogen systems with the utilisation of waste heat are important topics.

I welcome enquiries from potential PhD candidates from Home, EU and international countries who are interested in the following research areas: Hydrogen technologies, hydrogen storage, energy materials, energy systems. There are studentship opportunities available through the Sustainable Hydrogen CDT:
