Current Research
My research priority has been a landmark Cochrane systematic review of topical corticosteroids in eczema, including 104 trials, and containing more detailed safety data than similar reviews. It is part of the ECO project; a £2.4m NIHR Programme Grant for Applied Research to support self-care for eczema. I have also been part of the international team delivering a Cochrane review of phototherapy for atopic eczema and am currently working on a network meta-analysis of topical anti-inflammatory treatments for eczema.
In addition, I have been involved in a community engagement project to improve lay eczema knowledge and promote appropriate emollient and topical corticosteroid use, with professional orchestra Sinfonia Viva and Birmingham City University (BCU), funded by an NIHR Knowledge Mobilisation fellowship. The Dragon In My Skin book and film, with soundtrack developed during virtual workshops with children and families affected by eczema, premiered on 27th March 2021. A curriculum-linked resource pack for Key Stage 1 also accompanies the book and animation and has been distributed to around 800 schools in the Midlands.
Outside of CEBD, I am a service-user co-applicant on PANDA (Primary prevention of maternal ANaemia to avoid preterm delivery and other Adverse outcomes), an £2.4m NIHR Programme Grant.
Past Research
Whilst at the University of York, I was involved in the development of software for estimation of disease prevalence from incomplete longitudinal data: Crouch S, Lax SJ, Lacy SE. 'rprev: estimating disease prevalence from registry data', Comprehensive R Archive Network, first released 2nd September 2016. Details of how to obtain up-to-date code can be found here, with a user guide here.
Working towards my PhD at the University of Nottingham, I conducted a cross-sectional study of T helper cell subsets throughout the lifetime, employing clustering techniques to analyse multicolour flow cytometry datasets.
