Biography

Dr Tao Liu is a member of the Centre for Structural Engineering & Informatics Research Group.

Research facility : The research group has a single stage gas gun impact test rig ( 4 m long gun barrel ), Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar ( SHPB ), high speed camera and digital image correlation measurement system.

  • Micromechanics and multiscale modeling of metallic materials and fiber reinforced composite materials .
  • Mechanics and design of additively manufactured architectured structures and materials .
  • Multifunctional design of metallic / composite sandwich structures - The project aims to develop high performance,lightweight sandwich structures to fulfill multifunctional requirements in engineering applications such as energy absorption, active cooling and acoustic noise reduction.
  • Polymer Composites and composite sandwich panels under high velocity impact - This project includes numerical modelling of failure and damage of composite materials.
  • Computational simulations of cell / tissue mechanics - The project aims to develop bio-chemo- mechanical computational modelling of cells under chemical or mechanical stimulation such as cell- substrate interaction. This is an interdisciplinary research that combines computational biology and computational mechanics. The outcome of the project will be used to (i) develop novel understanding on mechanical stimulation induced cellular behaviour as well as tissue behaviour,(ii) design novel experimental protocols and (iii) design of engineered tissues.
