Laser and e-beam treatment of coatings

Post spray laser treatment or large area electron beam treatment can modify the thin top layer of a coating without affecting the bulk microstructure. The process is ideal for sealing a porous top layer to provide corrosion barrier. It was shown that a laser treated cold sprayed Ti coating shows similar corrosion performance as a bulk Ti material. In addition, the high cooling rate in large area electron beam treatment can produce amorphous phases on the top 5 um of the coating which can increase the wear performance by a factor of 10.
