Biography

Sue is a Senior Research Fellow in Involvement and Implementation and has been working at MindTech Medtech Co-operative since 2016. Sue is a medical sociologist with an interest in mental health and healthcare delivery, and has used qualitative research methods (interviews, observation and focus groups) to study a variety of topics. Sue brings experience of research relating to primary care in particular, and is conducting implementation research around new technologies in this and other contexts. Recent work has included technologies to assist with medication management (depression; ADHD) as well as novel therapies including virtual reality.

Sue received her PhD from the School of Sociology and Social Policy at Nottingham in 2013, and her thesis explored the views and experiences of recent help-seekers and members of the public to shed light on how views around mental health impact upon the help-seeking process. Broadly, her research involves drawing upon individuals' experiences (service user, carer, staff) to inform the topic under investigation. Alongside using methods that draw upon people's experiences, Sue is passionate about enabling people's lived experience to shape research itself, and her role has included leading on PPI (Patient and Public Involvement) from 2016-2020. During that time she led on and facilitated the involvement of people with lived experience of mental health problems, and members of the wider public, to inform and shape the work of MindTech and Nottingham BRC's mental health and technology theme. Sue worked alongside the Involvement Team, a dedicated and experienced group of volunteers who act as advocates, advisors and critical friends to MindTech and who bring a valuable perspective to the research.
