The Education team here at the University of Nottingham’s School of Life Sciences is a diverse, collaborative group of acadmics, all working together to review and improve the ways we teach.

Yvonne Mbaki

Associate Professor in Medical Physiology, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences



I am currently an Associate Professor in Medical Physiology, having gained a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences from University of Bradford and a MSc (Neuroscience) and PhD (Urology Pharmacology) from University College London (UCL). I also gained recognition of Senior Fellow from the Higher Education Academy in 2018.

As a teaching focussed academic, I am primarily involved in teaching Medical Physiology across the degree programmes of Medicine, Pharmacy and Life Sciences.

I have a diverse range of educational research interests including working towards improving the mental health and wellbeing of medical students, exploring the causes of the degree awarding gap and embedding inclusivity in the curriculum.

I have membership on various committees including Medical Admissions, School of Medicine diversity and inclusion medical education committee (DIMEC), Pharmacology teaching group, Senior management committee in School of Life Sciences, Faculty-wide Interprofessional education (IPE) committee and University education and student experience committee (nominated member).

Teaching Summary

My main roles include:

  • Teaching and coordination of multiple teaching modules in Physiology and Pharmacology on the Medicine, Pharmacy and Life Science degree programmes
  • Supervision of undergraduate project students
  • Co-course lead of the Thailand Joint Medical Programme (A10S) and UNMC-Biomedical Sciences Year 3 Mobility Scheme (C919)
  • Providing pastoral and academic support to Early Years Medical students as a Senior Tutor
