The built environment is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The CO2 emitted from the operation of buildings in the UK accounts for over 50% of the total UK CO2 emissions. For domestic buildings alone, the energy used for heating, lighting and power produces approximately 27% of the UK’s CO2 emissions. The average household causes about six tonnes of CO2 every year.
The UK Government has set highly ambitious targets for cutting these figures and wants all new housing to have zero carbon emissions by 2016, with non-domestic buildings to follow by 2019.
How we design and build the sustainable homes of the future – and how we adapt existing buildings to become better energy savers – is now the major challenge in construction.
