Vigilance in rail

A literature review on the topic of vigilance has been completed for the rail industry. The aim of this report is to assist the rail industry to understand the risks and influencing factors of the work of a Railway Lookout.

The Railway Lookout is responsible for identifying the traffic that is approaching an area of maintenance and their work requires sustained periods of vigilance. Currently there are no guidelines for the Railway Lookout with regard to the optimal duration of duties and how vigilance can be sustained.

The information from this piece of work is informing a current review of the duties and training of the Railway Lookout.
