Biography

Dr Pierzycki is a Research Fellow at the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre conducting research into management of severe-to-profound hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears or head).

Robert received MSc in Physics in 2001 from Adam Mickiewicz University (Poznan, Poland). He then joined the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) as a European Commission's Marie Curie Fellow, and in 2007 obtained his PhD from the University of Southampton. He subsequently moved to Nottingham where he held post-doctoral fellowships at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Institute of Hearing Research and the NIHR Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit.

Expertise Summary

Robert's research focuses on studying the effects of severe hearing loss on a person's communication and well-being and on how these effects can be managed by restoring hearing with devices such as the cochlear implant. More recently he has been investigating different interventions for alleviating tinnitus and related symptoms (e.g. anxiety, difficulties with sleep) in people with severe hearing loss. Robert has expertise in different experimental techniques such as computer-controlled electric stimulation of the hearing nerve through a cochlear implant, simulations of the loss of information associated with hearing loss (e.g. vocoders), and non-invasive monitoring of brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG).
